Cycling hooks

The bicycle hook is not a special accessory that will serve as a means of mounting a bicycle trailer. Also, it should not be associated with what can be found in cars. It is, however, a replaceable element of the bicycle frame, which is used to attach the rear derailleur. Does every bike have a frame hook? Yes, although they differ in shape. Some, as in the case of track bikes, are an integral part of the frame and are not used to mount a derailleur. They only allow the installation of wheels.

When to replace the frame hook?

As mentioned above, the frame hook is a replaceable element. But when should it be replaced? Before we move on to that, it is worth explaining the additional role it plays in the bike. Because it does not end at the mounting point for the rear derailleur.

The task of the hook is... to bend, and eventually break. It may sound strange, but that's the truth. In the event of the bicycle overturning to the drive side (i.e. the one with the gears, chain or cassette/freewheel), it is supposed to absorb the impact force and protect the derailleur from damage to some extent. This allows for significant savings - the rear derailleur is in many cases much more expensive than the frame hook.

If the bike was not knocked over, the derailleur hook will not need to be replaced. However, if you are already facing this misfortune, you must replace this element of the bike.

How to replace the frame hook?

Replacing the frame hook is only easy at first glance. After all, you just have to buy a new hook, unscrew the old one and assemble the new one.

This is just a quick start guide. However, the reality is much more difficult because you need to find the right model for a given bike. Each type of bike is different and each bike has a different hook. To find the right one, you can use the manufacturer's website, but it is worth going to an authorized service point that will help you pick and order the right model.
